We spent a blissful fortnight at La Maison près de la Fontaine in July 2024. The gite is typically French – which is what makes it so charming. You enter the kitchen/diner from the quiet street, go upstairs one way to the comfortable sitting room which leads to the private garden and shared pool area, and up a second set of stairs to the two bedrooms and bathroom. The second bedroom – fabulously comfortable bed - leads off the first, which is made private by curtains along the corridor – so you have to be a pretty friendly family group! The kitchen is well equipped for proper cooking and there are many supplies of pasta, coffee, spices, dishwasher tabs etc left from previous holiday makers. The communal pool area is beautiful, with plenty of sunbeds and different areas to sit and relax in the shade. The gite also has a lovely open fire in the kitchen, making it a perfect choice all year round. The hosts, Rachel and Manu, have converted this gite and the beautiful “La Belle Dame sans Regrets”, their Chambre d’Hôte business next door, themselves and strike a perfect balance between friendly and helpful and leaving you to get on with your holiday. Nothing is too much trouble for them and they are truly lovely people. The village is quiet but has a boulangerie and a bar/pizzeria and there are other villages nearby with a bigger offer; you will need a car though! The sense of community is palpable and there are several community-run events over the summer. There are at least three “caves” within walking distance and if you think you can hear donkeys in the distance you’d be right because they are part of the Domaine de la Rune’s family operation on the outskirts of the village. Don’t hesitate to book! I can’t wait to go back.
