Beautiful older building near the train station. Lovely woodwork inside. Room was traditional, with tatami mats and lovely decorations. The woman who took care of our room and dinner was incredibly nice. Dinner was delicious, a delightful array of small dishes. There's an indoor onsen too. Breakfast was traditional and Japanese, surprisingly light, yet filling. They place was both classy and homey.

It’s authenticity. The hotel is a traditional Japanese hotel and is like stepping into the past. The staff are really welcoming and genuinely want to make your stay a great experience. There is traditional Japanese style clothing to wear for free in your rooms. You will take tonnes of photos. The breakfast was fantastic and a real experience. There was no problem reserving the onsen because there are two onsens and only 6 rooms. Because it is a traditional ryokan, there are some aspects westerners may not be used to. The bedding is Japanese futons on the ground, as are the seats.

Great location. Very comfortable and spacious room. Very tasty breakfast with great view into the garden. Personell very polite and warm, especially the lady who greated me every time I left and came back to the ryokan.

We had a terrific experience at Ryokan Kaminaka. The owners were incredibly hospitable and the food served at breakfast was wonderful. Yukatas are provided should you wish (we did!) to wear them. The building itself, to include the tatami flooring, is a treat. Takayama is a lovely place for a few nights.
