‘As you set out for [insert place] hope your road is a long one, full of adventure, full of discovery.’ CP Cavafy Ithaca Named after Scylla, a beautiful but dangerous maiden in Homer’s Odyssey, we wondered what we would find in modern Scilla. A labyrinth of streets worthy of the Cretan minotaur navigated only with the aid of the modern equivalent of Ariadne’s thread – set your sat nav! – we found Chiara’s warm welcome, beautifully equipped room and comfortable bed far superior to anything Odysseus experienced. Breakfast on the balcony overlooking the straits of Messina was another simple delight – both culinary and visual. We asked about a restaurant for our evening meal – Chiara’s father loaded us into his comfortable motor-tricycle and took us there – and fetched us back. We would still be trying to find our way and would never have enjoyed the excellent swordfish – a must in this town.
