“A Wonderful, Home-Like Stay in Sapporo”
10 Nov 2024
During my five-day stay at Family Tree Guest House in Sapporo for an academic conference, I truly felt at home. The Japanese host and her British husband have curated an exceptionally clean and cozy space that’s perfect for young travelers looking for comfort and sophistication. The thick, warm blankets, heating by the window, and convenient laundry facilities were thoughtful touches that made my stay incredibly enjoyable. The shower had strong water pressure, providing a warm, relaxing massage—perfect for the cold weather. The guesthouse is located near a beautiful park, which made for a refreshing start to each day. The park is a stunning location, popular for photos, and even includes a cultural center and an observatory, which are worth exploring. It was a delightful way to begin my day before heading to the subway. Just a 5-minute walk away, there’s a Seven-Eleven, making it incredibly convenient. I visited almost every day to grab daily essentials, from chargers to snacks—everything was easily accessible. There are also several izakayas nearby, three of which I especially enjoyed. Some of them stay open late, and I got the chance to experience a uniquely friendly aspect of Japanese culture, spending time with local men and enjoying the delicious food and drinks. I recommend being cautious, though, as it’s easy to overeat and drink! A highlight was a nearby ramen shop that opens at 5:30 PM. I found myself waiting outside by 5:20 PM, eagerly anticipating their delicious ramen, which was perfect for warming up on cold days. The ramen, made by a sweet grandmother, felt like a comforting, home-cooked meal. I highly recommend trying it if you’re in Sapporo. I’ve stayed at guesthouses in Korea before, but this experience was by far the best. If you’re looking for a comfortable and inviting place to stay in Japan, I wholeheartedly recommend this guesthouse.
