“Central location”
06 Sep 2024
The studio is in a great location and it is easy to walk to all the sights. Restaurants and bakeries are a few minutes away in attractive pedestrian streets. The generous sofa folds down into a reasonably comfortable bed. The Airbnb pictures of the apartment show a metal table and 2 chairs. These have been replaced by 2 stools and a unit that folds out to create a table. The stools are “cleverly” hidden behind the kitchen door. The mosquito net listed as one of the amenities is actually a sliding insect screen which is part of the window nearest the sofa. It is ideal if you want fresh air but no insects. While the door of the building faces a busy street, the apartment is at the rear and quite peaceful. The Boulangerie du Palais nearby sells excellent breakfast pastries and bread. Others have commented on the stairs so we were ready for a tight spiral staircase. The stairs do wind up three long flights but they are generous enough in width to carry luggage and should pose little problem if you are fit and don’t have a huge amount of heavy luggage with you. There is paid parking immediately outside the building but available spaces are limited. There were no free spaces when we arrived. The streets perpendicular to the street of the apartment have free parking, also limited. We were able to park in one of these streets about 200m away. A large free parking area (Parking Reverseaux, Pl. du 11 Novembre) is 500m away. The listing on booking.com has some misleading details – one bedroom apartment (it isn’t; it is a studio), dressing room (not present), mini market (not at the apartment, Coop supermarket a short walk away). It was not clear to us where the advertised outdoor dining area was.

Great little flat comfortable, cosy. Well equipped. Everything you need. Very central, top floor, great view and staircase (good cardio) Very friendly and helpful owner. Would gladly return.

“Central, good value for money and homely”

This property was central to visiting the city of Saintes. The owner was caring enough to call us to check all was well with our arrival. The facilities were good for self catering. Good shower and the living area was made to look so homely. I really recommend it. The bed was a sofa bed so not normally my first choice but it was comfortable and for one night was not difficult to make up.

“Clean, characterful apartment, but on 3rd floor up a winding stairway with no lift and no internet.”

This is quite a difficult review for me to do, in terms of being both accurate and fair, as there were some negatives here. Communication from the owner in advance about how to enter and where the keys were was excellent. Saintes is a great little town, and the location of this apartment on the main street is ideal. Noise was not an issue and the bus stops and shops are close by. The property is a typical french townhouse, on three floors with an ancient, winding staircase, with the dated but delightful aspects that such a place always has. The main room itself was clean and pleasant, with table and sofa. The kitchen was small but adequate and there was enough equipment to make catering light meals no problem. The bathroom was clean and the shower worked OK. Despite the problems noted in the "didn't like" section, I must say that I did rather enjoy finding this characterful apartment, and if I didn't need my laptop and could travel a bit lighter, I would stay again, now that I know what to expect. For a pleasant place to have a drink nearby, I would recommend "The Salisbury" pub: yes, it's odd to find such a name in the middle of France, but apparently Saintes is twinned with Salisbury in England!
