The best thing about the Rex Hotel is the building itself. It’s absolutely amazing - a grand, nineteenth century house, even a palace, built for wealthy Porto merchants. The ceiling in our room was made up of elaborate plasterwork and paintwork, including portraits of some of its original owners. Really spectacular! /see picture/ It was also a huge room - and the ceiling was probably about five metres high. Not sure how many of the rooms on offer are this special, though. The ceilings of the reception, staircase and breakfast were almost as impressive - really beautiful. The staff were also absolutely lovely.

The property was clean, just outside the centre but still close to it. It’s an old building, but clean and well kept. The staff were very good and helpful. The older gentleman at reception and the girl in the afternoon were both excellent.

Great location just far enough enough away to walk to centre but right next to a lovely park. We watched storks nest in treetop out of our bedroom window :)
