I stayed at 26 La Porte Hostel during my recent visit to Pondicherry and overall had a decent experience. The hostel’s location is definitely a highlight, it’s well-placed, with easy access to key areas of the city, including the French Quarter and beaches. That said, the hostel leans more toward a DIY (do-it-yourself) vibe. There’s no permanent reception, and while there’s no strict curfew, you’re mostly left to figure things out on your own. If you’re someone who enjoys independence and doesn’t mind a bit of self-sufficiency, this won’t be a problem. But if you prefer attentive service or need guidance, you might find it lacking. The hostel is cleaned daily, which was appreciated, and the spaces are generally well-maintained. However, there are some areas that could be improved. For instance, there are no bed lights, which can be inconvenient in dorm settings, especially if you’re trying to be considerate of others. Also worth noting, there’s no female-only dorm! In short, 26 La Porte is a good choice if you're looking for a budget-friendly, centrally located hostel and you're comfortable with a more hands-off experience. Just don't expect the usual hostel perks like active staff support or fully equipped dorm amenities.

The property is located in a fairly accessible spot. It's a 900 m walk from the railway station. All necessary stuff is easily accessible nearby. The beach is also walk-ably close. Solo travellers will like this place but I saw families staying here comfortably too. It was an amazing experience staying with three different nationalities under one roof and sharing our perspectives. Staff is very helpful. A spacious kitchen can be utilized to cook and facilitated my stay a great deal.
