My daughter and I stayed at Nashu House for a night before an early flight. It is incredibly good value for money, and the staff could not have been nicer or more helpful - both before and during our stay. The room was clean and comfortable, with aircon and a fan and ensuite bathroom, and the guest house is well looked-after and clean. There was someone on reception 24/7, always ready to help. It is in a small square just behind the port and seafront - about 5 minutes' walk from the harbour. At no time did we feel unsafe walking to or from the property. We were concerned about having to depart at 2.30am, but the staff arranged a reliable taxi to the airport for us, and asked the driver to come to the door and accompany us to the carpark. I would absolutely stay there again before travelling, or just to visit Stone Town.

I won’t give a bad review. The staff are super friendly and really try their best. They make a big effort, and the rooms are extremely nicely and tastefully furnished. The hotel is located right next to the harbor, so if you arrive by ferry, it’s just a five-minute walk. You are right in the city center. Avoid rooms on the ground floor, as they are damp and moldy. I was coughing every night because of the mold, which is very unhealthy. The cleaning staff should be more careful to keep the room doors closed while cleaning, because the reception area is full of mosquitoes and they let them into your room. I didn’t sleep well any night because I was constantly chasing mosquitoes — three of them even bit me. As for breakfast, I’m not sure what all they offer, because I only ate two hard-boiled eggs and toast, which is completely enough for me. The room has a kettle and the option to make coffee or tea. The bathroom does not have a shower curtain, so when you shower, the entire bathroom gets flooded, and if you later want to brush your teeth or wash your hands, you end up walking on a wet floor. Finally, I understood why Japanese people have bathroom slippers.
