I loved Nagasaki. Being 75 years old, I knew that the US had bombed this city, for no cogent reasons. I had not expected the bay to be so breath-takingly beautiful. I lived in Fremantle, WA, and have seen many a gorgeous bay. Yet beyond the beauty of the hills around the crane-shaped harbour, i was ovewhelmed by the women who addressed me in the Candeo onsen. She was 80. Lived in Kobe now but her daughter had asked her to see where her grandmother had died. The next morning I saw her a breakfast and was overwhelmed again. I have been travelling in Japan for a month and keep on travelling for another month. The next morning in the onsen another same-age woman spoke to me, such a rare occurrence in this country. And then, when we went back to the raucous place my heart-daughter, who had joined me for 10 days, had found the previous night, the old guy told us his mother had died in the ashes of Nagasaki, I was dumbfounded at the graciousness of him and all the survivors. The staff at reception, breakfast and cleaning services were excptional. Next time I return to NAgasaki, that is in 2026, I shall return to Candeo Hotel, and not onlu in Nagasaki!
