The house is very old, of great character, with thick walls, traditional windows, flagstone floors downstairs and wood burning stoves. It made a great base for a group of friends to explore/revisit upper Swaledale. There is a range of short walks and longer ones directly from the house. We spent our evenings sitting around the big kitchen table together. The two adjacent sitting rooms had big comfy sofas and made quieter spaces to read. It has WiFi for those who want to keep in contact. We had excellent weather for walking, but the house had plenty of board games and books for dark evenings or days when the Pennine weather isn't as appealing. There's a big walk -in pantry off the kitchen with lots of storage space, fridge freezer, washing machine and plenty of kitchenware in both kitchen and pantry. The jars with tea and coffee materials and even chocolate biscuits were a nice touch for our arrival. There was no shortage of essentials such as loo rolls, cleaning stuff and dish towels. Everyone found the beds comfortable and the main house bathrooms were spacious, modern and very clean. The Kings Head pub is very handily close, just yards away- we ate there one night and there's another pub in Muker, plus a very good tearoom next to the woollens shop. The tearoom sources locally, does everything on the premises and is well worth a revisit. It makes a very good stop off if you take the little bus to Keld, walk down the river valley to Muker then on to Gunnerside.
