The most important thing to say to anyone who is thinking of booking a stay on the beautiful Bateau Mariance is that this is in no way a conventional hotel or bed and breakfast. If you want the normal hotel experience then look elsewhere. You will not get the full comfort and space of a hotel room but you will get to stay on a former Dutch barge that is over 100 years old and is owned and run by the most amazing hostess, Marianne herself. She is such a character and made us feel so welcome for our week on her boat. Nothing was too much trouble and we were fed so much food and drink I'm surprised the boat didn't sink! OK, the facilities are a little cramped but, again, it is a converted barge so space has to be tight. Despite this we felt like we were part of the family while we were there. If you do want space you can sit out on the top decks with an evening drink to watch the sun go down over the canal. There are several very good restaurants within a short walk but do bring a torch as the towpath is dark. Insect repellent may also be necessary but citronella candles are provided. Parking is 50 metres or so away from the boat, but it is possible to bring the car closer to unload. Most guests while we were there seems to be cyclists staying for just one night, but a week on board allowed us to get to know Mariance, her family and the cat Minette well, and they are all charming. We also recommend booking for an evening meal on board as the meal Mariance cooked for us was one of the best of the holiday. We happily recommend a stay on the historic Bateau Mariance and hope to return someday.

I’m so glad we stayed on Bateau Mariance although not quite what I’d expected it was full of colour and fun and a lovely welcoming host who looked after us beautifully . Easy to find on the tow path and close to the centre of this delightful little village .

it was beautifully located right next to the lively Le Somail with a choice of restaurants. The hostess was so friendly, wonderfully helpful and attentive and provided such a comfortable bedroom, ample breakfast, warn welcome and departure - a must do!!!
