A wonderful old and rusty hotel / hostel which has seen better days but is so charming and special in every corner. We enjoyed our 4-day stay, the big room on the top floor with a veranda attached. For us no other place could have been better.

Broadlads is a 200 year old building complex that has, over the years, served as an urban palace, as the diplomatic offices of the old Ottoman Enpire, and more recently, as the most famous backpacker hostel in South India. Do not expect luxury accomodation. Most rooms share a common bath/toilet. Few are airconditioned. Five times a day the next door mosque calls the faithful. But you can experience the fabulous architecture of the complex - a string of courtyards, strange walkways that seem designed by M. C. Escher, two foot thick masonry walls. This was a backpacker haven in the 60s and 70s. Some travellers stayed for months. Others waited for the weekly ship departures to the Andamans. The location is central. Several good restaurants nearby, including the Ananth Bhavan - an old school veg cafe of the type that have largely disappeared from the Indian city scene. Broadlands is an experience, not to be missed.
