Lovely building in beautiful grounds. We had a lovely room with a four poster bed for us and our little dog. Well decorated, warm cosy and comfortable.

What a beautiful setting Beds are comfy and the bathroom in great condition. Read a couple of negative reviews however, our stay was very nice. Great art on the walls too

“Good value but more effort required.”

OK, lots to unpick here. Please take this as constructive criticism. Overall, the stay was good value for money and generally the hotel is exquisite. Also, the bedroom was lovely, warm and clean; with a splendid bathroom. However, it wasn't all roses and rainbows. Individually none of these points are dire but combined they are telling: >1. It was not clear, when we first arrived, where reception actually was. There were no staff to be found (this was a theme throughout our stay, more of which later) and there were no signs directing you. We didn't feel welcomed. Perhaps more staff should be available, or at least an information sign. >2. When a receptionist did arrive, the gentleman ahead of me was complaining about the furniture in his room. All he wanted was an extra chair - sadly, customer service was lacking here as he was simply told that "no chairs were available"! Really?! We were surrounded by chairs! Perhaps staff training towards a better appreciation of customer service could be instigated. >3. Unfortunately, inside the front hall, there was an acrid smell of a dead rodent (maybe under the floor boards close by). This was a shame but we didn't feel welcomed. Perhaps a staff member (handyman) could be available to deal with ongoing maintenance and troubleshooting; indeed the same staff member could be available to carry extra chairs to customer's rooms. >4. The layout of he public rooms doesn't work well: the bar is on the far side of the dining room, but has no chairs - so, if you want to sit down and enjoy a pre-dinner aperitif you have to go past the lounge area, main hall and dining room, collect your drinks then take them back to the lounge. Perhaps a small bar could be positioned near/in the lounge area or, failing that, staff could be on hand to take your order and then bring your drinks to you in the lounge.
