Guests receive a BaselCard upon check in. This Guest Card includes complementary use of Public Transport within Basel City and surroundings (Zone 10, 11, 13, 14 & 15, including Euroairport), no free WiFi, as well as discounts on admission to cultural and leisure activities. Please note that the public transfer (2nd class) from EuroAirport or Basel main train stations to the hotel on the day of your arrival is free of charge with your booking confirmation.

I am not a fan of the remote check in using an iPad, with no reception staff present. The guest is left to enter all the relevant details and then load the key card. The room number is allocated and advised by email and it was not obvious how to get more than one room close to one another. This system is fine if you are tech savvy and the process is straightforward, if not, you’re required to ring the helpline. The hotel is situated close to trams and buses and is a 25 minute walk from the main railway station or quicker by tram. We obtained a complimentary travel pass by contacting the hotel, this for the duration of the stay. The hotel is close to restaurants and bars and was quite noisy at night time and in the early hours. Having said this, the hotel was clean and comfortable. There was a fridge and a safe. A communal room is offered and hot drinks are available 24/7 free of charge. There is a vending machine selling alcohol and soft drinks. Croissants and fruit are offered daily, again free of charge, and the savoury seeded croissants are delicious. The hotel was more expensive than those which I stayed in, in Geneva and Zurich and of a similar standard. The breakfast was not listed as being included, so it was a bonus and well worth having. I would recommend Hotel Merian am Rhine.

The room was a bit tired and the bed not particularly comfortable but it was very clean. Bathroom superb. Huge toilet which was fantastic comfort for a portly gentleman such as myself. Area was nice with plenty of transport links if needed. It’s self check in so can’t comment on staff but checking in was very easy.
